A Persian medallion, worn through to a checkerboard.

A Persian field: a lobed medallion in madder red and teal, saffron corners full of palmettes, a navy border of small flowers. Then it wore through. At two corners and down one side the rug gives way to a black and cream checkerboard, with the odd dusty-pink square, as if another floor were showing underneath.

The checks and the worn edges are part of the design; the rug arrives new. It holds its own in a plain room: grey concrete, white walls, one black chair.
